In May 2007, I decided to fly to Birmingham on the Saturday
of Memorial Day Weekend. When I arrived I went to the Amtrak station to
drop off my overnight bag. I took a walk through downtown Birmingham.
My first stop was the McWane Science Center. Didn't stay long, just long
enough to determine the IMAX movies that they were playing, but never returned. When I left
the center, I heard drums. I noticed the tail-end of want turned out to be
a mini-parade to Kelly Ingram Park. It was a rally for the "Save the
Streets" organization of Birmingham. I then walked onto the Birmingham
Museum of Art where I had lunch. Then onto the public library to check my
e-mail and to find a book to read on my train trip back to Baltimore. I
found a book called Dead Ball where the main character girlfriend's last
name was Slavin and the imaginary baseball team was playing the Orioles, so I
had to buy it (it cost a buck!). Then I walked to the Peanut Depot and
arrived just as she was closing and bought a pound of roasted peanuts.
When I told her about my one day trip to Birmingham, she gave me a peanut sack with
their logo for free!
My return trip to Baltimore, Maryland was on Amtrak's Crescent train
leaving at 2:44 pm (it was about 10 minutes late). I got a sleeper car
that was very small, but big enough for one. The dinner and breakfast on
board was good and the train personnel were very nice and helpful. We
arrived in Baltimore 40 minutes ahead of schedule. I then took the Light Rail
back to the airport to get my car.
This trip allowed me to check off Alabama and get the
overnight train trip in that I was going to do out west. The out west trip
was not needed since Josh's and my trip to LA covered the states that I would
have done on my own.
In December 2014 spent the night in Hoover on my
mini-road trip from Alabama-Arkansas-Texas-Louisiana-Mississippi.
I revisited the Peanut Depot, which I had visited in May 2007.
In January 2015 flew home from Birmingham.
